Virtual mental health platform
Location: United States

MindStrong is a virtual mental health platform that provides scheduled therapy sessions, prescriptions, and 24/7 support.

MindStrong offers a complete support system through their app for people with mental illnesses. They partner with health insurance companies to provide individuals with 24/7 mental health support, prescriptions, and monitoring.

Patients receive 20-minute long therapy sessions through video, messaging, or by phone. Therapists use a combination of evidence-based modalities, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and crisis management. Psychiatrists are available to prescribe medication or adjust treatment plans as needed.

MindStrong has developed a way to incorporate predictive strategies into mental health support. Their mobile app tracks the way the user interacts with their smartphone. Only the clinical team see this data, so users maintain complete privacy. It learns how the user swipes, how fast they type, and other data points. If there is a sudden change in how the user interacts with their phone, such as typing slower than usual, it may indicate a difference in their mental state. These changes can be shared with the therapist for more personalised care.

“It’s interesting to learn about how changes in tapping, typing, swiping and scrolling on our phones are being used as an indicator of mental health. Non-verbal cues are an important indicator of our wellbeing and given how often we interact with our phones; it’s noteworthy to see how this can be used as a marker of mental health. As always, a new approach needs to be validated and have an evidence-base.” – Dr Vinay Shankar
