CORE is a small wearable that transmits real-time data about the athlete’s core temperature during training.
For many top athletes, results can come down to differences in millimetres or split seconds. Training top athletes is a science that relies on advances in technology to develop more informed training programs that can fine-tune the athlete to push their abilities as far as possible.
Core temperature monitoring can be used as a tool to help guide performance training. It helps paint a detailed picture of how the body responds to different intensities, how well bodily function is being maintained, and how the body adapts to external temperature changes such as training in the heat. Traditionally, monitoring core temperature required frequent checks with thermometers and probes, which can be distracting, invasive, and sometimes require a controlled environment such as a lab.
CORE, a small device worn by the athlete, changes that by providing a continuous real-time transmission of data during exercise. The athlete’s core temperature can be displayed on a mobile app or Garmin device so adjustments can be made directly in response to the athlete’s core temperature. The device has been tested for accuracy against ingestible capsules – This is the gold-standard kit used to acquire core body readings in professional competitors.
High-level athletes can use CORE to understand how they are progressing during heat adaptation training and get a better understanding of their performance during endurance training. Real-time data allows athletes and trainers to immediately respond to the information and doesn’t interrupt training. The device, launched in 2020 by greenTEG, is available with various accessories based on the needs of the athlete. It can be used with a chest strap, arm strap, or medical-grade adhesive.
