Users scan their teeth once a week with the dental camera, which assesses teeth with a smartphone.
Most people will experience dental issues in their life, including gum disease, cavities, or oral cancer. Depending on the severity, the impact they can have range from a sudden inconvenience to something life-threatening. Preventative dental care is vital to maintaining good oral health, but frequent check-ups can be expensive and may not catch issues quickly.
Germany-based dentaltech startup Empident is working to change that with a small device that allows people to be proactive about their dental health. The dental camera connects to the patient’s smartphone, which analyses the images for anything that may need to be addressed like plaque build-up or new cavities.
If the system detects anything during the five-minute weekly test, it alerts the user that they should book an appointment with their dentist. Having an accurate, frequent overview of dental health ensures patients can seek help from their dentist as soon as an issue is detected. This helps prevent potential complications or the need for more extensive dental treatments such as fillings, crowns, root canals or tooth extractions.
