Fully remote male fertility testing & sperm storage

Sperm Count - Sperm Storage
United States

Legacy tackles the stigma surrounding male fertility head-on with fully remote, discreet services. The startup offers at-home sperm testing kits, fertility supplements, and sperm storage.

For decades, women have been able to protect their fertility by freezing their eggs. Typically, men don’t face the same level of age-related infertility as females, so preserving their ability to choose parenthood in the future has been less discussed. In addition, the stigma surrounding infertility issues have further contributed to the lack of progress. The World Health Organisation estimates that 15% of all couples worldwide are infertile. However, these numbers do not account for those who do not seek out fertility treatments.

Legacy, founded at Harvard in 2018, is a Boston-based startup providing remote tools for males to test and protect their fertility. In a few short years, the startup has raised over $20M for furthering its research and increasing the services offered. Legacy works with some insurance providers to help remove the financial barrier to testing and freezing samples.

Sperm count testing can be an emotionally sensitive experience that can prevent people from requesting the service. Sperm count refers to the density and quality of sperm cells and is essential in understanding male fertility. Studies have found that men who have a low sperm count may have a reduced ability to conceive a child. Several factors can decrease sperm levels, making it more challenging to conceive over time. This can include lifestyle choices, environmental factors, certain medications, medical treatments or health conditions.

Legacy provides a straightforward, fully remote analysis service that offers a way for males to test their fertility without discussing it in person. The process takes about one week, from ordering the kit to receiving an in-depth analysis. The collection kit is delivered the day after ordering online. Clients register the kit online and arrange the pick-up whenever they are ready. It takes about three days to process the kit and the comprehensive report. Customers have the option of scheduling a video call with a fertility specialist to discuss the results and prospects going forward.

Customers who wish to preserve samples can opt for cryostorage. Legacy offers many protected facilities throughout the US that can store samples until they are ready for parenthood. Storage is available on a flexible timeline from months to decades, depending on the individual’s needs.

Supplements designed to protect and improve male fertility are available to order through their website. Legacy offers a wealth of free information on their website relating to male fertility such as lifestyle factors, science news, Covid-19 related fertility issues, and plenty more.
