Can a smartphone app track migraines?

Migraine Tracking App - Migraine-Buddy

Migraine Buddy is a migraine tracking app that helps people manage their migraines by uncovering triggers and looking for patterns in the most effective treatments.

Roughly 12% of the population suffers from migraines, but the severity varies considerably. Some people are only affected by the neurological disorder once or twice a year, while others may have an attack almost daily. Severe migraines can cause debilitating head pain, nausea, vomiting, numbness, affect eyesight, and sometimes lead to people attending emergency departments.

Managing migraines can be challenging because of how differently they present in each patient. Triggers vary, as does the way patients respond to various treatments. Managing migraines requires observation to uncover triggers, identify warning signs, and find the best treatments.

Migraine Buddy is an app for tracking migraines for iOS and Android that helps users understand and manage their migraines by recording each episode. When a user registers an attack, they enter the time it began and ended, and the location on their head or neck where the pain originated with user-friendly graphics. They can complete multiple checklists for a full picture of the migraine. The user is asked what foods or activities may have triggered the migraine, the warning signs they experienced, how and to what extent the migraine impacted them, and what treatments they used and how effective they were.

Over time, this data can be used to understand an individual’s migraine triggers better, be alert to the signs of the onset of a migraine, and what actions help them the most. Users have reported 68 000 triggers through the app, with 2 600 of them commonly reoccurring. All the tracking data can be easily shared with a doctor, and the migraine tracking app offers a feature for medication reminders.
