The fully digital therapy program takes between 6-10 weeks to complete. After completing an assessment, the patient receives a personalised plan created by a therapist to help them improve their mental health using CBT.
Mental health affects every aspect of daily life, from how people perform at work to their physical health. For most people, there are multiple barriers to accessing therapy. It can be prohibitively expensive, there may be long waitlists, and physically attending the scheduled appointments can be an added stressor for some.
BEACON, a company based in Toronto, has come up with a solution to make cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) more accessible. CBT is a common type of psychological treatment that helps patients understand and review thinking patterns and behaviours. These can then be changed and improved to have a positive impact on the way a person feels.
The program is available entirely online, and patients can work through it at their own pace, with most completing it in 6-10 weeks. It can be used for depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and insomnia. Patients start by taking an assessment to help their assigned therapist understand their needs. Once the therapist reviews their assessment, the patient can begin the personalised treatment program.
At any time, the patient can message the therapist and receive a response in 1-2 business days. The therapist adapts the program as needed by monitoring symptoms and reactions to the treatment plan, but there are no phone calls or appointments.
Currently, the digital therapy program is free for those living in Ontario. The government has decided to temporarily fund the program to help residents receive the mental health support they need during the Covid-19 pandemic. For others, the program may be covered by their employer, insurance, or they can pay for the program themselves.
