Early detection of diabetic retinopathy is key to preventing it from progressing to blindness. Smart Retina’s AI-powered algorithm makes regular eye screenings more affordable.
Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that can affect people with diabetes, causing partial vision loss, blurred vision, and blindness. When it is detected early, treatment can prevent the issue from progressing and causing vision loss: 80% of blindness is preventable. However, early detection requires regular screenings that aren’t accessible to many, or patients may hold off until there is a problem.
Smart Retina uses artificial intelligence to make regular eye screenings more affordable; the concept is similar to Eyestar. A retinal photo is taken and uploaded to Smart Retina’s cloud server, which analyses the image and provides a report. The digital solution to eye screening means more patients can be assessed each day and without the need for a specialist.
Smart Retina is one of the startups emerging from Bangladesh’s growing health-tech sector. The high poverty rates in Bangladesh and their overstretched healthcare system has fuelled the growth of healthtech developments to meet the growing demands. Smart Retina is 1 of 5 enterprises participating in Bangladesh’s first virtual health-tech accelerator.
